In the recent months passed, it has come to our attention here at the Alpine office that there are a few little pieces of information (read: of vital importance and absolutely 100% necessary) in taking steps to line up your home projects. Believe me, these are not puzzle pieces I was aware of, either, before becoming a part of this industry. So, we have decided to take a few moments to share a couple little tidbits of wealth in knowledge to (hopefully) be able to spare you some headaches, some frustrations, and some money in the long run of completing home projects.
Let’s begin with talking permits. Permits are a necessary requirement in a slew of home repairs and upgrades. Small changes, such as changing out faucets or fixtures, that do not require a licensed plumber, HVAC technician, or electrician, etc. would not require a permit to be completed. These are the small projects that any homeowner could complete on their own (though we still recommend a professional where feasible).
Any projects that include remodeling, structural changes, electrical modifications, roofing, decking, siding, full-scale upgrades, etc. absolutely do require a permit. Without these permits, there is a multitude of possible repercussion one could face – i.e. potential fines, cease work orders from the city, not being able to find additional help from licensed professionals (in most cases licensed professionals will not touch a project without a permit because of the legalities), etc.
Bottom line, it is always, always, ALWAYS a good first step to investigate whether your project requires a permit before you begin!
